International Coffee Organization Blog

We are the ICO. Our mission is to strengthen the global coffee sector and promote its sustainable expansion in a market-based environment for the betterment of all participants.

Coffee prices soared higher at the beginning of the month, with the ICO composite price gaining 15 cents in just 6 days, but rains in Brazil drove prices lower, finishing the month below where they started. Nevertheless, the average monthly price for October is the highest in over two and a half years. At the end of coffee year 2013/14, total exports reached 111.3 million bags, slightly down compared to 2012/13, but the second highest level on record. Despite the drought, exports from Brazil have continued to exceed their levels of a year ago.

The daily price of the ICO composite jumped from 169.63 US cents/lb at the beginning of October to a high of 185.09, before falling back down to 162.08 by the end of the month. The monthly average of 172.88 is the highest since February 2012, 6.9% higher than September. This price swing has been driven almost entirely by weather reports from Brazil, with dryness at the beginning of the month spurring prices higher, before scattered showers dampened any bullish spirits. The discussion is now centred on whether damage to the 2015/16 crop is already irreversible, and to what extent these rains can encourage new flowering.

In terms of the group indicators, the three Arabica indicators all reached their highest monthly average in over two and a half years (February 2012 for Colombian Milds and Brazilian Naturals, January 2012 for Other Milds), recording increases of 7.6%, 7%, and 8.2% respectively. Robustas also increased by 4.2% to reach their highest level in six months.

As a result, the arbitrage between Arabica (on the New York market) and Robustas (London) also increased by 13.6% to 114.61 US cents/lb, again, the largest gap since February 2012. The price differentials between the three Arabica groups and Robusta all increased significantly.

Total exports in September 2014 reached 8.1 million bags, compared to 8.5 million in September last year. This brings to a close coffee year 2013/14, with total exports amounting to 111.3 million bags, 1.5% less than the 113 million bags shipped in coffee year 2012/13. Nevertheless, this is still the second highest level on record, ensuring that the coffee market has been well supplied over the last two years.

Exports of Colombian Milds increased significantly compared to last year, up by 18.2% to reach 12 million bags for the first time since 2007, as production in Colombia continues its recovery. Exports of Other Milds, on the other hand, were 12.1% lower than last year on 22.7 million bags. In Central America, lower exports were recorded by almost all countries in the region for the second consecutive year, due to the severe damage from coffee leaf rust. As a result, total shipments of Other Milds have fallen by 4.5 million bags in the last two years.

Exports of Brazilian Naturals are up 3.6% to 34.3 million bags, bolstered by the continued strong performance of Brazil, which has now had higher monthly exports for eleven consecutive months. Furthermore, the exchange rate of the Brazilian real against the US dollar has depreciated significantly in the last two months to its lowest level since April 2005. This will increase the local income from dollar-denominated coffee sales, thus encouraging further sales.

This brings total exports of Arabica to 69 million bags in the last twelve months, roughly unchanged on 2012/13. In terms of Robustas, the two main producers have seen mixed fortunes. Exports from Vietnam are estimated up by 10.7% to 23.8 million bags, while shipments from Indonesia have collapsed by over 50% to an estimated 5.9 million bags. Total exports of Robusta are therefore down by 3.7% on 42.3 million bags.

To conclude, although slightly down compared to last year, total exports in coffee year 2013/14 were still over 110 million bags. Increased shipments from Brazil and Colombia compensated for the decrease from Central America, but an increase from Vietnam was outweighed by the lower exports from Indonesia.

U.S. coffee traders face delays as suppliers haggle over price

NEW YORK Fri Jul 11, 2014

(Reuters) - U.S. coffee traders say they face months-long delays in getting shipments as suppliers from Central America to Asia push to revise contracts, the latest sign that the meteoric rally in arabica futures earlier in the year has disrupted trading.
At least one supplier is demanding customers fork out more cash for beans that were contracted before arabica prices nearly doubled in the first few months of the year as a long drought scorched the coffee belt in top grower Brazil.
In March, some local traders in Colombia ripped up contracts as prices took off, but this is the first time since the rally that U.S. traders have said suppliers have ditched efforts to negotiate more flexible terms and are using tougher tactics.
One U.S. importer who spoke on condition of anonymity said a supplier is holding his coffee ransom unless he pays more than what was originally agreed.
"They say, 'Give me more money and I'll deliver'," he said.
He is owed three lots (112,500 lbs) of arabica coffee, which are now worth $183,375 based on futures prices, roughly $50,000 more than before the rally that started in late January.
For now, he said will not bow to the demands.
He added that seven containers (roughly 2,100 60-kg bags) of arabica from Costa Rica, a small high-quality producer, that were due to land in the United States in December 2013, have still not arrived, forcing him to buy elsewhere at higher prices, while still holding the exporter to the contract.
Another importer, who also did not want to be named, said he has encountered similar problems.
"It is hard getting the coffee we are owed," he said, adding that he has agreed to more flexible delivery times and switched origins when possible.
Such disruptions are limited in scale for now, but highlight the impact of the volatile price moves and of concerns about availability, rekindling memories of rallies in 1997 and 2011, when traders said suppliers also sought prices higher than previously agreed on.
The disputes also come as supplies of high-quality beans from Central America have slowed to a trickle after a leaf disease called "roya" wiped out swathes of crops, and as harvesting gets underway in Brazil.
Large U.S. roasters such as Starbucks Corp, Folgers-maker J.M. Smucker Co and Maxwell House-maker Kraft Foods Group Inc have responded to the price rally by raising retail prices for the first time since 2011.
Some exporters may be waiting for a resurgence in prices even as the worst fears about crop damage in Brazil have subsided, sending the market down 25 percent from the April peak of $2.19 per lb.
"When people sell cheap, they're always delaying, sending back qualities, buying time," said Ernesto Alvarez, chief executive of large importer COEX Group in Miami.
Central America's worst-ever outbreak of roya, an air-borne fungus that damages and sometimes kills coffee trees, has already forced some suppliers to postpone deliveries, in some cases, by as much as a year.
Traders have looked to Peru to replace lost supplies, but shipments from the early harvest there have slowed after roya affected low-altitude plantations more than expected.
COEX has bought more beans from Colombia, the world's biggest producer of high-quality washed arabica, and drastically less from Central America and Mexico this year.
Even so, shipments from Brazil are late, Alvarez said.

ƯỚC TÍNH CUNG CÀ PHÊ TOÀN CẦU 2014/2015 GIẢM TRONG KHI NHU CẦU TĂNG

Ước tính sản xuất cà phê toàn cầu 2014/15: Một sụt giảm theo từngvùng

June 24, 2014 1:12 pm

2014/15 Global Coffee Production Estimates: A Region-by-Region Breakdown

Green coffee in bags. Photo courtesy of the LEAF Project.

The United States Department of Agriculture has released its latest estimates for annual global coffee production, predicting a 1.5 million total drop to 147.8 million bags in 2014/15, despite rising demand.

The USDA’s semiannual announcement is a major speculative force, and the downward estimate is likely to increase uncertainty what has already been a highly volatile market based on unclear data. That said, the global production total has only been revised downward by 400,000 bags since the USDA’s previous estimates in December.

(related: Sustainable Values Combined with Market Tools: A Future for Specialty Coffee)

Of course, much of the decline is attributed to weather factors in Brazil, where the harvest is currently underway, although slight rebounds in Colombia, Central America and Mexico due to leaf rust (la roya) response are helping improve global inventory to meet record-high exports and demand. Following is a region-by-region breakdown of some of the main points from the report:

Brazil

  • Brazil’s Arabica output is forecast to drop a second consecutive year to 33.1 million bags, breaking the biennial cycle for the first time in over two decades.
  • The combined Arabica and Robusta harvest is forecast at 49.5 million bags, down 4.2 million from last year.
  • Prolonged drought as well as high temperatures in Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo (about 80 percent of Arabica production) adversely affected the filling and development of beans.
  • Parana’s Arabica output is forecast 800,000 bags lower following extensive tree removal due to last year’s frost damage.
  • The Robusta harvest is forecast at a record 16.4 million bags as output rebounds 2.1 million from last year’s weather related shortfall in Espirito Santo.
  • Consumption remains flat after two decades of steady expansion.

Vietnam

  • Vietnam’s production is forecast at a record 29.3 million bags, up 1 percent.
  • Exports are forecast 2 million bags higher to a record 27.0 million, reversing the recent inventory buildup.

Colombia

  • Colombia’s production is forecast up 1.0 million bags to 12.0 million on higher yields.
  • Continued growth is expected following 7 years of below-average output due to the spread of coffee rust and coffee cherry borers.
  • The rust initially affected as much as 40 percent of the planted area, but has since declined to less than 10 percent following an aggressive tree renovation program.
  • Exports are forecast to gain 300,000 bags to 10.5 million on increased shipments to the United States and Europe.

Central America and Mexico

  • After two years of declining output caused by coffee rust, the region is forecast to increase 870,000 bags to 16.2 million.
  • Honduras is expected to add 400,000 bags to 5.0 million as rust-resistant trees from recently renovated land reach maturity.
  • Guatemala is forecast to rebound 200,000 bags to 3.6 million on improving yields.
  • El Salvador, where production plunged 60 percent last year, is forecast to rebound 175,000 bags to 675,000 as more growers implement control measures.
  • Approximately 40 percent of Central America and Mexico exports are destined for the United States, followed by 35 percent to Europe.

Indonesia

  • Indonesia’s production is forecast to drop 600,000 bags to 8.9 million. For the second consecutive year, excessive rain during cherry development lowered yields.
  • Exports are forecast to decline 600,000 bags to 5.4 million on less available supplies.

India

  • India’s production is forecast to add 100,000 bags to 5.1 million on higher Robusta output in Karnataka, the largest coffee producing state.
  • Arabica is forecast modestly lower as it enters the off-year of the biennial production cycle. Bean exports are forecast unchanged at 3.7 million.
  • In addition to production estimates, the USDA also released some import estimates for the European Union and the United States, which represent the top two importing regions in the world, respectively:

European Union

  • The European Union accounts for nearly half of the world’s bean imports and is forecast to increase 500,000 bags to a record 46.0 million.
  • Top suppliers include Brazil (29 percent), Vietnam (24 percent) and Indonesia (6 percent).
  • Ending stocks are forecast to remain at 10.5 million bags after trending lower over the last decade.

The United States

  • The United States imports the second-largest amount of coffee beans and is forecast to increase slightly to a record 25.0 million bags as consumption continues to rise.
  • Top suppliers include Brazil (25 percent), Vietnam (18 percent) and Colombia (13 percent).
  • Ending stocks are forecast unchanged at 5.7 million bags.

Starbucks Raises Coffee Prices: Boost To Margins And Revenue Growth

By Trefis, July 07, 2014, 02:03:43 PM EDT

Starbucks Corporation ( SBUX ) has decided to raise the prices of its coffee menu, responding to soaring commodity prices, especially coffee beans. The price of Arabica coffee beans has surged almost 100% from a level of 106 cents per pound to around 220 cents in mid April, due to tight supply as a result of prolonged drought in Brazil, followed by recent floods.(( Coffee futures, July contract, 2014 )) However, the prices dropped back to 170-180 cents per pound in the month of June, but are expected to rise again due to increasing demand for premium coffee beans and the forecasts regarding the early outbreak of El-Nino , the oceanic disturbance, that can intensify the already adverse weather conditions in Southern Brazil. Companies such as Starbucks ( SBUX ), Dunkin' Brands ( DNKN ), Peet's Coffee and Keurig Green Mountain (NASDAQ : GMCR), that are majorly dependent on coffee for revenues, are facing a tough period adjusting to rising input costs.

Starbucks had an excellent second fiscal quarter recording its 17th consecutive quarter with above 5% comparable sales growth. The highlight of the second quarter was its noteworthy comparable sales growth in China and Asia-Pacific (7%), as well as Europe and the Middle East (6%). Operating margins expanded by 130 basis points to 16.6%, primarily due to favorable commodity costs. ((Starbucks Q2 earnings transcript, March 24, 2014)).
Starbucks feels that the price hike will be barely noticeable considering the coffee enthusiasts can already afford the lofty prices and the increased prices won't have much of a dent on customer visits.

We have a $76 price estimate for Starbucks, which is 2.5% below the current market price.

See our full analysis for Starbucks Corportion

Starbucks has always been known for its above-average pricing. The company is raising prices on some of its drinks by 5 to 20 cents, whereas its packaged coffee sold in supermarkets and other retail stores will rise by $1 (8%) to $9.99 per bag as compared to Folger's 9% and Maxwell house's 10% hike. Company's spokesman Zack Hutson mentioned that the price of grande and venti brewed coffee will increase by 10 to 15 cents, whereas tall and venti lattes will cost 10 to 20 cents more.

Inflation has not only impacted coffee prices but its impact is being felt in food-at-home items and the cost of milk is up for the seventh month in a row. These companies have no choice else to increase prices and as long as customers are comfortable in buying their products, the price hike will be slowly passed on to them. Two months back, according to Starbucks' CEO, Howard Schultz, the company was not planning to raise its coffee menu prices despite the sharp rise in commodity costs. Now when its competitors have raised the coffee prices and customers are aware of the reasons of the hike, the possibility of losing the customer traffic is nearly negated for Starbucks. The reason coffee lovers go to other chains such as Dunkin' Donuts and Peet's Coffee is their lower priced coffee and now when they have raised prices as well, the customers might as well pay for better quality Starbucks coffee.

Revenues & Margins To Improve

Looking at the current coffee prices in Starbucks, this hike seems insignificant to coffee consumers. However, considering the seasonality trend, the company generates 50% of the total revenue in the second half of the calendar year. Consequently, this move might positively boost company's revenue growth for the next 6 months. According to our estimates, beverage spend per customer visit for the year 2013 was around $4.25 for company-operated stores. If the company maintains the customer traffic, this figure might reach $4.30 for the year 2014 and further higher in 2015.

Moreover, in its latest Q2 earnings transcript, the company mentioned its one year worth of protection on inventory and contracts. To hedge against rising coffee prices, Starbucks virtually has locked all of its coffee needs for 2014 and around 40% for fiscal 2015 at slightly favorable prices. Now that when its input costs are nearly fixed at favorable levels, taking into account the company's brand appeal, ability to maintain its customer base and lure more traffic through its in-store amenities, we might even witness margin expansion in those quarters.

Coffee farmers in Vietnam, the top grower of the robusta variety used by Nestle SA, are probably holding the smallest inventory of unsold beans since 2012 after a record crop, underlining prospects for a global shortage.

Reserves at the end of last month were 15 percent of the harvest, compared with 18 percent in June 2013, the median of estimates from nine traders and analysts compiled by Bloomberg show. That’s the lowest proportion for this time of year since 2012. Production may drop 4 percent to 1.65 million metric tons in the year starting October from a record 1.72 million tons a year earlier, the survey showed. That’s little changed from 1.64 million tons estimated by traders and analysts last month.

Shrinking stockpiles and a smaller crop in Vietnam may bolster futures in London which have climbed 22 percent this year on speculation demand will outstrip supply. The shortfall is estimated at 1.6 million bags, or 96,000 tons, by Volcafe Ltd. in the 12 months starting October. Rabobank International increased its robusta price forecasts this month, citing lower inventories and a looming El Nino that could parch parts of AsiaBrazil and Indonesia are the top growers after Vietnam.

“Vietnamese farmers are not interested in selling at this price level, especially as they hear about lower output in Brazil and Indonesia,” said Phan Hung Anh, deputy director of Dak Lak-based Anh Minh Co., Vietnam’s largest private exporter by shipping volume. “The fact that they have lower stockpiles and are not willing to sell will probably drive prices higher.”

Prices Rally

Farmers had 252,000 tons of unsold reserves at the end of June from 263,000 tons a year earlier when the crop was 1.5 million tons, according to the survey. Stockpiles fell as growers boosted sales in June, when robusta prices rallied 4.1 percent in London after an 11 percent slump the previous month.

Robusta ended at $2,056 a ton on NYSE Liffe on July 4, rising 10 percent from a three-month low on June 10. Arabica, the variety favored for specialty drinks such as those made by Starbucks Corp., settled at $1.718 a pound on ICE Futures U.S. in New York on July 3 for an advance of 55 percent in 2014.

The global market, including arabica and robusta, will have a shortage of 11.3 million bags in 2014-2015, the most in more than a decade, from a surplus of 4.7 million bags this year, Volcafe, a unit of trader ED&F Man Holdings Ltd., said June 3. The estimate takes into account production losses from a drought in Brazil, which is the world’s biggest arabica grower, and smaller crops in Vietnam and in Indonesia.

Weather Threat

The increase in arabica has widened its premium over cheaper robusta beans to about 78 cents a pound on July 3 from a five-year low of 27.9 cents in December. That’s encouraging more roasters to buy robusta, Kona Haque, head of commodities research at ED&F Man in London, said on July 3.

“With El Nino scheduled to arrive in September, we foresee further downward production revisions,” Rabobank analysts including Tracey Allen in London wrote in a report. The bank raised its fourth-quarter forecasts by $50 a ton to $1,900 and the estimate for Jan.-March 2015 by $100 to $1,900.

“Rains have been regular, aiding crop development,” said Anh of Anh Minh Co. “However, water levels are lower than usual so that may cause a shortage in the next season.”

Rainfall recorded in Dak Lak averaged 264.07 millimeters in June at 10 stations, including one in neighboring Dak Nong province, compared with 295.96 millimeters in June last year, according to the Meteorology and Hydrology Department in Dak Lak province, which represents about 30 percent of the harvest.

Average water levels in rivers and streams in Dak Lak in the last 10 days of June were 0.3 meter to 0.5 meter lower than the same period last year and 0.2 meter to 0.4 meter less than the average in previous years, the weather office said July 1.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology said this month that it maintained an alert for an El Nino developing by September. The event may bring drought to the Asia-Pacific region and heavier-than-usual rains to South America

Coffee Consumption in Indonesia Seen Climbing to Record in 2016

By Yoga Rusmana May 7, 2014 2:06 PM GMT+0700

Coffee consumption in Indonesia, the third-biggest grower of the robusta variety, may jump 33 percent to a record in the next two years as population and income increase in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

Demand will probably rise to 400,000 metric tons in 2016 from an estimated 300,000 tons this year and 260,000 tons in 2013, Irfan Anwar, chairman of the Association of Indonesian Coffee Exporters and Industries, told reporters at a conference in Jakarta today. Output may total about 700,000 tons in 2014 from 650,000 to 7000,000 tons estimated for last year, he said.

Rising domestic consumption may reduce supplies from Indonesia, where robusta accounts for about 80 percent of the output, and help a surge in prices of the beans used by Nestle SA (NESN) in instant drinks. Futures of the more expensive arabica variety, brewed by specialty companies including Starbucks Corp., advanced in New York to a two-year high in March as drought threatened crops in Brazil, the top supplier. Robusta traded in London has jumped 28 percent this year.

“Population is increasing, income per capita is increasing and lifestyle is improving,” said Irfan, who estimated that the share of arabica production will rise to 25 percent in three years from 19 percent in 2013. “Improvement in coffee quality is also helping boost consumption.”

Arabica has surged 83 percent this year to $2.0225 a pound on ICE Futures U.S. yesterday, the biggest advance among 24 commodities tracked by the Standard & Poor’s GSCI Spot Index. Robusta traded at $2,147 a ton on NYSE LIFFE.

Growing Demand

Indonesia became the world’s eight-largest coffee consumer in 2012 and second to Japan in theEast Asia and Southeast Asia region, according to International Coffee Organization. The country produced 10.5 million bags of coffee in 2012-2013 of which 8.9 million bags were exported, U.S. Department of Agriculture data show. A bag weighs 60 kilograms or 132 pounds.

“Consumption has been increasing quickly, averaging 6.6 percent growth since 2000, and 5 percent per annum going back to 1990,” London-based ICO said in a report released this year. “With a population of nearly 250 million, per capita consumption is less than 1 kilogram per person, and shows significant potential for further growth.”

Indonesia’s economy has expanded under 6 percent for four consecutive quarters through March and domestic consumption accounted for more than half of that growth.

Arabica beans accounted for 59 percent of the world’s 153.3 million bags of coffee output in 2012-2013, according to USDA data. Indonesia produced 1.7 million bags of arabica that year to become Asia’s top producer of the beans, replacing India, USDA data show. Vietnam is the world’s biggest grower of robusta, followed by Brazil.

Asia Coffee-Differentials vary; Ramadan, London hurt trade

Thu Jul 3, 2014 1:27am EDT
* ELB beans traded at $60-$80 premiums
* 4, 80 defects, grade 2, 5 pct broken unsold

By Lewa Pardomuan

SINGAPORE, July 3 (Reuters) - Higher-quality robustas were traded this week but the physical market lacked activity because of the Muslim fasting month in Indonesia and volatile prices in London, which curbed interest for Vietnamese beans, dealers said on Thursday.

Liffe robusta futures have gained more than 20 percent this year after New York arabicas rallied on uncertainty over drought damage to crops in main coffee producer Brazil.

The Extra Large Beans variety from Indonesia's main growing island of Sumatra was sold at premiums of $60 to $80 to London, but the widely-traded 4, 80 defect beans struggled to find buyers. The grade was offered at premiums of between zero and $30, versus $10 last week.

"I haven't bought anything. The last offer I've got from Sumatra was at +$20 premiums," said a dealer in Singapore. "I am not so sure if local roasters are already covered, and Ramadan can be of the reasons why people are not in the market."

Indonesia, the world's third-largest coffee producer after Brazil and Vietnam, is also the world's most populous Muslim nation. During Ramadan, all healthy adult Muslims are expected to refrain from eating and drinking during daylight hours.

Indonesia competes with neighbouring Vietnam in the robusta market. The bitter-tasting robusta beans are either blended with higher-quality arabica for a lower-cost brewed coffee or processed into instant coffee

"We've been confronted by a very quiet market," said an exporter in Java. "I've only seen deals for high-quality beans and foreign buyers already preparing for their summer holidays."

Indonesia's coffee output is likely to plunge to a three-year low in 2014/15 due to unfriendly crop weather, while higher domestic consumption will soak up about half the produce, a Reuters survey showed, curbing sales by the key exporter.

Rival Vietnam was equally deserted, with grade 2, 5-percent broken beans quoted at discounts of $30 to London futures, wider then last week's traded prices of $10 to $15 below futures.

Vietnam's domestic coffee prices rose to between 41,000-41,200 dong ($1.92-$1.93) per kg on Thursday, the highest in nearly seven weeks, following gains in London's futures markets.

"There could be deals at -$20 but it's tough to say," said the dealer in Singapore. "It's slow just like in Indonesia and it seems nobody is keen to do anything at the moment."

Liffe's September contract ended up 1.5 percent at $2,047 tonne on Wednesday, having slipped earlier this week to track wild movements in arabica. (Editing by Sunil Nair).
